Data Methodology

How comparisons work, what we verify, and what you should confirm yourself.

How providers are selected

  • The provider is licensed to sell pet insurance in the US.
  • It publishes policy documents we can review.
  • It insures dogs, cats or both.
  • We can obtain sufficient plan data to compare it fairly.
  • Inclusion is not an endorsement, and not every provider appears in every area.

How estimates are calculated

This build uses sample data and a simplified demonstration formula. Estimates are not real prices.

In the live product, estimates come from provider rating data or a provider quote API and use your pet’s species, breed, age, ZIP code and chosen deductible, reimbursement rate and annual limit. Estimates are labeled separately from actual quotes.

How results are ordered

By default, results are ordered by how many of your selected preferences a plan matches, then by estimated monthly price, then alphabetically. You can re-sort by price, reimbursement, deductible or annual limit.

Compensation is not an input to the ordering.

What our labels mean

  • Lower Premium: the lowest estimate among the plans shown at the settings selected.
  • Higher Reimbursement: 90% reimbursement or the highest offered among the plans shown.
  • Unlimited Annual Limit: no annual dollar cap at the settings selected.
  • Strong Dental Coverage: the plan lists dental illness and injury coverage as included.
  • Labels describe data. They are not rankings or recommendations.

What is verified

Provider facts are marked verified only when a value, a primary source and a verification date are on file. Review information such as ratings is shown only if it is real, sourced and permitted.

What you should confirm yourself

  • The final price with the provider.
  • Exclusions, waiting periods and pre-existing condition definitions in the policy.
  • That the provider is licensed in your state.
  • Whether the plan reimburses your veterinarian’s actual invoices.
